This is a hard to find Japanese Doll. Marked: The Original Shibaten - Handcrafted In Japan - on the foil hang tag. Also, Futapa Dollatelier Kochi on the bottom label.

A Shibaten (a type of Kappa) was a legendary Japanese water spirit, appearing as a humanoid turtle. This doll is a depiction of that creature. Made in the 1960's and measuring 6 1/2" high.

It is wonderfully crafted of fabric, with a painted face & straight blonde hair. It has three pointed fingers or toes on each limb. There is a back shell, neck scarf, straw hat, and the doll holds a musical instrument. It is attached to a wooden stand with Japanese writing.
